Above the spring resort, a short trail leads up the volcanic hillside to the ruins of Posi Ouinge, a large ancestral Tewa pueblo inhabited between roughly 1350 and 1500 CE. At its height, the settlement had several hundred rooms arranged around plazas on the mesa edge. The Tewa-speaking people who lived here regarded the springs below as a source of spiritual and physical healing.
The ruins are unexcavated and largely unrestored, which means you are walking through history rather than a tidied-up park exhibit. The views from the mesa top over the Ojo Caliente valley and the surrounding high desert are excellent. The trail starts near the resort and takes about 30 to 45 minutes round trip.
