The Zuni Mountains rise just south and east of Ramah, a forested upland reaching around 9,000 feet above sea level — a sharp contrast to the surrounding desert basin. The mountains are part of the Cibola National Forest and contain a network of hiking and mountain-biking trails. The forests are predominantly ponderosa pine at higher elevations with pinon-juniper on the slopes.
For visitors based in Ramah, the mountains provide a day of hiking relatively close to town. The Continental Divide Trail passes through the range. Conditions can be icy from November through April; summer afternoons bring afternoon thunderstorms typical of the New Mexico monsoon season. The area is uncrowded by the standards of more famous New Mexico wilderness areas.
