Ponderosa pine trails and trout streams around Sierra Blanca Peak

The national forest surrounding Ruidoso offers hundreds of miles of trails through ponderosa pine and mixed conifer, ranging from easy strolls to serious all-day hikes up to Sierra Blanca Peak (11,981 feet). The Rio Ruidoso running through town is stocked with trout and draws fly fishers in spring and summer. In fall the aspens on the upper slopes turn gold — it can be as good as anything in Colorado, and without the crowds. Trail maps are available at the Smokey Bear Ranger District office in Ruidoso.
