The Mescalero Apache Reservation surrounds Ruidoso to the south and west, and the tribal cultural centre in the village of Mescalero (about 12 miles south on US-70) provides a good introduction to the history and traditions of the Mescalero people. Exhibits cover traditional lifeways, the turbulent history of the reservation period, and contemporary Apache culture.
The tribe also operates the Inn of the Mountain Gods resort and the Ski Apache ski area, both major employers in the region. The cultural centre is a good way to understand who the land belongs to before you go skiing on it. Call ahead to confirm opening hours, which are variable.
