Tucumcari has more than thirty large outdoor murals scattered along Route 66 and adjacent streets — most painted between 2003 and 2010 as part of a town-wide public art program led by the Lowe family. The subjects range from Apache history to dinosaurs (a nod to the Mesalands paleontology museum) to nostalgic Route 66 imagery.
The murals are the easiest way to spend a couple of hours walking the old highway. The tourist office on Route 66 has a free map; the best concentrations are around the Tee Pee Curios and the western end of Tucumcari Boulevard.
