Tucumcari's value is its Route 66 inheritance. The old highway runs straight through town as Tucumcari Boulevard, and what remains — neon-fronted motels, the Blue Swallow chief among them, plus a handful of murals and the desert mesa that gave the town its name — makes it one of the better-preserved stops on the Mother Road between Amarillo and Albuquerque.
