New York isn't usually the first place that comes to mind for beaches, but Long Island delivers miles of Atlantic coastline that keeps people coming back. From the surf breaks at Rockaway to the old-money dunes of the Hamptons and the car-free calm of Fire Island, there's more variety here than most people expect.
New York City
Rockaway Beach, located on the south shore of Long Island in the New York City borough of Queens, is one of the city's most popular spots in the summertime. In addition to swimming and sunning, visitors to Rockaway Beach can enjoy strolling along the boardwalk, fishing and surfing. There are also basketball courts, volleyball courts and several playgrounds.
Brighton Beach, in the Brooklyn borough, is another popular summertime destination. Located on Coney Island, the westernmost of the barrier islands of Long Island, Brighton Beach boasts close proximity to the Coney Island Boardwalk, famous for its amusement area.
The Hamptons
Located on the east end of Long Island are the villages and hamlets that comprise the popular resort area of the Hamptons. In addition to its beaches, the Hamptons offers boating, fishing, dining and shopping. Among the most popular of the Hamptons' villages are Southampton, known as much as a business center as a beach town; Sag Harbor, known for its history as a whaling port and writer's colony; and Montauk, which boasts 6 state parks and is famous for its fishing and surfing.
Fire Island
Fire Island, a barrier island along Long Island's south shore, is known for its natural beauty. There are no roads and no cars allowed on Fire Island--guests can arrive there via shuttle ferries. In addition to the breathtaking scenery, guests to Fire Island can enjoy world-class dining, shopping and nightlife. Its pristine sand dune beaches offer plenty of space for relaxation or adventure.
Greenport
The historic village of Greenport, located on Long Island's North Fork, is also known for its tourism during the summer. In addition to its beaches, Greenport offers many shops and boutiques, a variety of dining options from fine restaurants to crab shacks, and a 1920s Carousel. Greenport also hosts the annual Maritime Festival in September.
Other Beaches
There are a number of other beaches around New York City, including Orchard Beach and Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx, and Manhattan Beach and Midland Beach in Staten Island, just to name a few.
