Sam's Point Area

Shawangunk ridge preserve with views, dwarf pine barrens, ice caves, and waterfalls.

Sam's Point is the reason Ellenville belongs on many itineraries. The preserve protects one of the best ridgetop dwarf pine barrens in the world, with trails to cliff viewpoints, Lake Maratanza, the Ellenville Fault Ice Caves, and Verkeerderkill Falls.

Parking can require reservations on busy spring, summer, and autumn weekends, so check the state park rules before driving up. The weather is also more exposed than in the village below; bring water and layers even for a short hike.
