Ellenville

Shawangunk foothill village known for Sam's Point, hang gliding, and a revived theatre.

Ellenville sits below the southern Shawangunk Ridge, where the Catskills begin to feel close but the landscape is still sharp-edged with cliffs and old resort roads. The village itself is small and uneven, but it has two real reasons to stop: Sam's Point above town and the long-running hang-gliding scene that uses the ridge winds.

The best day here is outdoors first. Hike the Sam's Point Area of Minnewaska State Park Preserve for views, dwarf pine barrens, ice caves, and waterfalls, or book a tandem hang-gliding flight if you want the ridge from the air. Back in town, Shadowland Stages gives Ellenville a cultural anchor that many larger villages lack.

Ellenville is not a polished Hudson Valley weekend town, and that honesty helps. It works best for travellers who want the Shawangunks without staying in New Paltz, or who need a base on the western side of the ridge.
