Camp Hero State Park

Former coastal defence and radar base with trails, bunkers, bluffs, and lighthouse views.

Camp Hero is Montauk's strangest landscape: a former Second World War coastal defence post and Cold War radar base, now a state park of woods, bluffs, trails, and fenced-off military remains. The huge radar tower still rises over the trees and gives the place its faintly unsettling character.

Come for a walk before or after the lighthouse. The trails are rougher and quieter than the main point, with Atlantic views, old batteries, and glimpses of Montauk Point Lighthouse from the west. Stay on marked paths; poison ivy and ticks are part of the deal.
