Montauk

Long Island endpoint of surf beaches, fishing docks, sea cliffs, and the Montauk Point lighthouse.

Montauk is the rougher, saltier end of the Hamptons. The road runs out here at the eastern tip of Long Island, where the Atlantic and Block Island Sound meet below a lighthouse, and the village still has more fishing boats and surfboards than white-tablecloth polish.

The best day starts at Montauk Point, where the lighthouse and rocky shore give the place its "end of the island" drama. From there, Camp Hero adds Cold War oddness and cliff walks, while Shadmoor is the quieter bluff-top ramble close to town.

Montauk is not cheap in summer, and weekend traffic can be miserable. Still, it earns the trouble better than most beach towns: you can swim at Ditch Plains, walk the dunes at Hither Hills, eat seafood by the docks, and watch fishing boats come back through the inlet. It feels like a real working edge rather than just another resort strip.
