Hither Hills State Park

Oceanfront state park with a long beach, campground, freshwater lake, and walking dunes.

Hither Hills is the softer western side of Montauk: two miles of ocean beach, a large seaside campground, picnic areas, woods, and a freshwater lake. It is busy in summer but still feels more open than the village beaches.

The most distinctive feature is the walking dunes on the Napeague side, where wind slowly pushes sand inland over scrub and low trees. It is an easy place to spend a half-day if you want beach time without giving up on a proper walk.
