Taughannock Falls State Park

215-foot waterfall, taller than Niagara, just up the lake

Ten miles north of Ithaca, on the west side of Cayuga Lake. The easy gorge trail from the lower parking lot is a flat three-quarter-mile walk to a viewing platform at the foot of the falls — usable by strollers, with no climbing. The harder rim trail climbs the canyon walls for a longer loop and overhead views.

Spring melt and after heavy rain are when the falls are at full force; in late summer the flow can drop to a thin ribbon. The park has a small beach on Cayuga Lake and is one of the easier ways to combine waterfall and swim.

A story
At 215 feet, Taughannock Falls drops further than Niagara and is the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. The name comes from the Delaware (Lenape) word taghkanic, "in the trees," though a colourful local story has it that a Lenape warrior named Taughannock was thrown over the falls in a battle with Cayuga forces.
