Green-Wood Cemetery

478-acre Victorian cemetery and National Historic Landmark — the city's most beautiful landscape after Central Park

Green-Wood Cemetery opened in 1838 on the glacial hills of southwestern Brooklyn and was, before Central Park, the most popular tourist destination in the United States. The 478-acre landscape of hills, ponds and elaborate monuments is a National Historic Landmark and one of the finest examples of the rural cemetery movement. The Gothic Revival gatehouse on Fifth Avenue is worth seeing, and the summit of Battle Hill offers a panoramic view of the harbour and Lower Manhattan. Notable burials include Boss Tweed, Leonard Bernstein and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
