Sackets Harbor

Lake Ontario village with War of 1812 battlefields, old barracks, and a compact historic waterfront

Sackets Harbor is a small Lake Ontario village whose quiet streets carry more military history than you expect. During the War of 1812 it was one of the most important American naval bases on the Great Lakes, close enough to Kingston for the British to attack it twice.

The village is compact enough to cover on foot. The Sackets Harbor Battlefield anchors the west end, while the village historic district keeps the old stone, brick, and waterfront scale intact. Madison Barracks, later used by the US Army until after the Second World War, adds another layer.

This is not a big museum town, and that is part of the appeal. Come for a slow day of battlefield paths, lake views, restored 19th-century buildings, and a clear sense of how exposed the young United States was on its northern water frontier.

Guide

Getting There

Sackets Harbor is about 13 kilometres southwest of Watertown, reached by road on NY 3 and local roads toward the lake. Boaters can also approach from Lake Ontario; Kingston, Ontario, sits across the water to the northwest.
