The original Erie Canal towpath runs along the waterway through the heart of the Tonawandas and is now a continuous walking and cycling trail. From the canal's western terminus where it meets the Niagara River, you can follow it east through Tonawanda's Gateway Harbor and beyond — a leisurely day's bike ride will get you to Lockport and its restored flight of canal locks.
In summer the harbour fills with pleasure boats and the bandshell at Niawanda Park hosts free Friday-night concerts. Bike rentals are available from a couple of small operators on Sweeney Street. The trail is flat the whole way.
