The waterfront promenade where the Erie Canal meets the Niagara River is the social centre of both Tonawandas in the warmer months. The park has a small amphitheatre, a footbridge that crosses the canal to North Tonawanda, and floating docks for pleasure boats.
In July, Gateway Harbor hosts Canal Fest of the Tonawandas — eight days of midway rides, food trucks, music, and fireworks that is one of the largest free festivals on the Erie Canal. The rest of the year it is a pleasant short stroll, especially at sunset over the river.
