Durham Bulls baseball

A summer evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park is one of the best entertainment bargains anywhere in the Triangle. Tickets are cheap, the food is good, and the play in the International League is genuinely high-quality — Triple A is one rung below the major leagues. The eponymous brass bull beyond the left-field wall snorts smoke when a Bull hits a home run.

The season runs from late March to early September. Most home games are Tuesday to Sunday; Saturday-night fireworks shows are a Durham institution. Tickets are available online or at the gate; arrive early enough to wander the surrounding American Tobacco Campus.

A story
The Durham Bulls became a cultural institution thanks largely to the 1988 film "Bull Durham", with Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon — a romance set around the unglamorous reality of minor-league ball. The film made the team's name and turned the old wooden park into a pilgrimage site for baseball fans across America. The team has since moved to the larger Durham Bulls Athletic Park next to American Tobacco.
