North Carolina

Southeastern US state stretching from Blue Ridge mountains to Outer Banks barrier islands.

North Carolina stretches from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic coast, offering an unusual range of landscapes for a single state. The Smoky Mountains in the west rise above 6,000 feet, with some of the oldest mountains on Earth and forests so dense they create the blue haze that gives the Blue Ridge its name. The coast, meanwhile, is defined by the Outer Banks -- a chain of narrow barrier islands where the Wright Brothers first flew and Blackbeard met his end.

Charlotte is the largest city, a banking center with genuine Southern charm and an increasingly interesting food scene. Raleigh, the state capital, anchors the Research Triangle alongside Durham and Chapel Hill -- three college towns that together form one of the most educated corners of the American South. Asheville in the mountains has reinvented itself as a haven for artists, craft breweries, and the Biltmore Estate, the largest private home in America.

The coast rewards exploration. Wilmington on the Cape Fear River combines historic architecture with beach access. Kure Beach, just south of Wilmington, pairs a quieter strand with Fort Fisher's Civil War earthworks and aquarium. Ocracoke Island, reachable only by ferry, is one of the quietest stretches of shoreline on the East Coast. Cape Lookout offers 56 miles of undeveloped barrier islands, wild horses, and a lighthouse you can climb. And the beach towns of Holden Beach and Hatteras Island draw families who return year after year.

In the Piedmont between the mountains and the coast, smaller cities like Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Salisbury are steeped in history -- from the first lunch counter sit-ins of the civil rights movement to Moravian settlements dating to the 1700s.

North Carolina barbecue alone is worth a detour. The state is split between vinegar-based eastern style and tomato-based Lexington style, and partisans on both sides take the matter seriously.
