Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

Writer Carl Sandburg's Flat Rock farm, with house tours, trails, pastures, and a working goat herd.

Carl Sandburg spent the last two decades of his life at Connemara, a quiet farm estate in Flat Rock. The house tour is the heart of the visit, but the grounds matter just as much: pastures, woods, lake paths, and the dairy goat herd raised by Sandburg's wife, Lilian.

It works well even if you are not especially attached to Sandburg's writing. The farm gives a good feel for Henderson County's gentler side, where literary history, agriculture, and Blue Ridge scenery overlap.
