Fort Fisher State Recreation Area

Wild south-end beach and marsh park with surf fishing, turtle nesting, and Cape Fear views.

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area protects the wilder south end of the island, where beach, dunes, salt marsh, and the Cape Fear River sit close together. It is popular for surf fishing, and it is the only North Carolina state park that allows four-wheel-drive beach access in designated areas.

For a quieter visit, take the short trail through the marsh to the observation deck over Zeke's Island and the river. In warm months, loggerhead turtles nest along the park's beaches, so keep clear of marked areas and follow posted rules.
