Mooresville's Gravity Hill

Mooresville's Gravity Hill, on a quiet stretch of road in the rural Mount Mourne area south of town, is an old roadside oddity that has not quite died out. Pull off, put the car in neutral with the brakes off (carefully — watch for traffic), and the vehicle appears to roll uphill. It is an optical illusion produced by the surrounding slopes confusing your sense of level, but it is convincing enough to feel uncanny in the moment.

There is no marker, no parking lot, and no formal address — ask a local for the latest spot, as it has shifted a couple of times. Best done as a quick stop on the way to or from Lake Norman, and best at dusk with the windows down.

A story
Gravity hills are a recognised optical illusion: a road that looks downhill is in fact slightly uphill, and a car in neutral appears to roll the wrong way. Local legend in Mooresville has it that the road is haunted, that a school bus once crashed at the bottom, and that the ghostly passengers push your car uphill to safety. The story makes no historical sense — but the illusion is genuinely there, and the curious still come.
