New Bern's Firemen's Museum is small, local, and more interesting than it sounds. It tells the story of two rival volunteer fire companies whose competition was part civic pride, part theatre, and part genuine public service.
The old equipment and company lore work because New Bern is a town of wooden buildings and narrow historic streets. After walking the old centre, the museum adds a useful sense of how fragile these places were before modern fire protection.
