Hammocks Beach State Park

Hammocks Beach State Park is the strongest reason to put Swansboro on a coastal route. The mainland visitor area and ferry dock sit near town, while the park itself reaches out to Bear Island and smaller barrier islands at the mouth of the White Oak River.

Bear Island is the prize: a long, undeveloped beach reached by ferry in season or by kayak and canoe when conditions suit. It is a better match for walkers, paddlers, and campers than for people who want a boardwalk resort.
