Fort Totten State Historic Site preserves a 19th-century military post that later became an Indian boarding school. The buildings are substantial, and the history is not simple: frontier military life, federal Indian policy and local Spirit Lake stories all meet here.
It is best visited with enough time to read the interpretation rather than treating it as just another old fort.
