White Horse Hill National Game Preserve protects prairie, wetland and wooded hills on the Spirit Lake Reservation south of Devils Lake. A drive through the preserve can bring bison, elk, deer and prairie dogs into view, and the birding is good when the wetlands are active.
It was formerly called Sullys Hill, a name tied to a violent chapter of Dakota history. The current name reflects the Dakota name and is the one to use.
