Barnesville's pumpkin festival began in 1964 and has grown into a late-September event that can draw more than 100,000 people. The centrepiece is the giant pumpkin contest, but the weekend also brings parades, classic cars, crafts, farm machinery, live music, and contests for things like hog calling and tall tales.
It is the one time of year when Barnesville stops being quiet. If you want small-town Ohio at full volume, come for the festival; if you dislike crowds, avoid that weekend completely.
