Barnesville

Small southeast Ohio village with Victorian architecture, cattle-ranch tours, and a huge pumpkin festival.

Barnesville is a small village in southeast Ohio, west of Wheeling and close to Interstate 70. Most of the year it is quiet, but it has enough odd pieces to reward a detour: a restored Victorian mansion, a railroad depot, prehistoric petroglyphs, and a working cattle ranch that leans hard into horned breeds.

The Belmont County Victorian Mansion Museum is the most polished sight, with carved woodwork, decorative hardware, and period clothing inside a large Romanesque house. The Barnesville B&O Railroad Depot adds a smaller industrial-history stop, while the Barnesville Petroglyph pulls the story much further back.

If you time it for late September, the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival changes the scale of the place completely, drawing enormous crowds for giant pumpkins, parades, old farm machinery, craft displays, and small-town contests. Outside festival weekend, Barnesville works best as a half-day stop between the Ohio River towns and the back roads of eastern Ohio.
