Thorla-McKee Park

Small roadside park marking an early 1814 oil well

Thorla-McKee Park is small, but the story is unusually good: in 1814, Silas Thorla and Robert McKee found oil while looking for salt water, decades before the Pennsylvania oil boom. The well is marked near the junction of State Routes 78 and 564 east of Caldwell. It is a short stop, but a memorable one if early industrial history interests you.
