The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden is consistently ranked among the top zoos in the country, known particularly for its conservation programmes and its success breeding rare and endangered species. The gorilla habitat, one of the best in North America, has produced dozens of gorilla births over the years. The zoo also operates a significant cheetah breeding programme.
The botanical gardens aspect of the institution is genuine — the grounds are meticulously maintained with seasonal plantings, and the zoo is worth visiting in spring for the tulip display alone. The zoo is located in Avondale, north of downtown, and is easily reached by car. Allow at least three hours for a proper visit.
