Stuart's Opera House

Restored 1879 opera house and live-performance anchor on Nelsonville's Public Square.

Stuart's Opera House is the cultural heart of Nelsonville. The building anchors Public Square and hosts concerts, theatre, films, and community events in a room that still carries the scale of a prosperous nineteenth-century coal town.

Check the calendar before you go. The exterior is worth a look, but the building makes most sense when the lights are on and the square has people moving around it.

A story
Stuart's Opera House opened in 1879, closed in 1924, then nearly disappeared after a 1980 fire during restoration. Its survival is a large part of why Nelsonville's square still feels like a civic centre rather than a leftover.
