Nelsonville is a small Appalachian Ohio town with more texture than its size suggests. Coal, clay, brickmaking, and railroads shaped it; the old Public Square and depot still give the centre a compact, lived-in feel.
The best reason to come is the mix of old industry and arts. Hocking Valley Scenic Railway runs heritage trains from the depot, Stuart's Opera House keeps the square culturally alive, and the Historic Square Arts District is good for a short wander.
Nelsonville is not a substitute for Hocking Hills, but it is a good spare-day stop if you are already in Athens or the Hocking Valley. Add Brick Kiln Park or the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, and the town earns its place.
