Wiley Post Airport

Wiley Post Airport is one of the busiest general aviation fields in Oklahoma, named for the pioneer Oklahoma aviator who made the first solo round-the-world flight in 1933. The two-runway field is home to flight schools, corporate jets, helicopter services, and the Oklahoma Museum of Flying. The control tower's distinctive A-frame top is visible from much of Bethany.

You can drive directly onto the public observation area at the south end of the field for a clear view of light-aircraft and helicopter traffic. The pilot's lounge cafe is open to walk-in customers and serves a respectable breakfast. The airport's general-aviation traffic, at around 200,000 operations a year, gives it the kind of constant motion that no civilian airport in the area can match.

A story
Wiley Post died, with the cowboy humorist Will Rogers, in a 1935 crash near Point Barrow, Alaska. Their plane, an experimental Lockheed hybrid, was overloaded and underpowered. The deaths of two of the country's most famous figures on the same day were front-page news for a week.
