Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma

The Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma is headquartered in Pawnee, their presence giving the town a cultural and historical dimension that most visitors don't expect. The Pawnee people — one of the major Plains nations — were relocated from Nebraska to Oklahoma in 1874 after sustained pressure from the US government. The tribal headquarters on Harrison Street includes administrative offices and a cultural centre.

The Pawnee Nation holds powwows and cultural events throughout the year, some of which are open to the public. The annual Pawnee Indian Veterans Homecoming in late June or early July is the largest powwow in the area and draws Pawnee people from across the country. Check the tribal website for event dates if you are planning a visit.
