Jim Thorpe Home

The Jim Thorpe Home is a state historic site on the edge of Prague, preserving the two-storey white clapboard house where the athlete lived with his family in the early 20th century. Jim Thorpe (Wa-Tho-Huk, "Bright Path") was born near here in 1887, a member of the Sac and Fox Nation, and grew up to become arguably the most complete athlete America has ever produced.

The house contains period furnishings, photographs, and artefacts relating to Thorpe's extraordinary career: his Olympic medals, football memorabilia, and newspaper clippings from the era when his exploits made him famous around the world. Guided tours are offered seasonally. The site is small and can be seen in under an hour, but for anyone interested in the history of American sport or Native American athletes, it is genuinely moving.

A story
Thorpe's 1912 Olympic gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon were stripped by the IOC after it emerged that he had been paid a small sum to play minor-league baseball — a technicality that would be trivial by today's standards. The medals were finally restored to his family in 1983, thirty years after his death.
