Robbers Cave State Park

Robbers Cave State Park sits about five miles north of Wilburton along Highway 2, a 8,246-acre park that takes its name from the outlaw legends attached to its labyrinth of sandstone caves and rocky ravines. The park's centerpiece is a narrow cave passage that visitors can squeeze through, emerging into a natural rock amphitheater — a genuinely exciting scramble for anyone not put off by tight spaces.

Beyond the cave itself, the park has nearly 20 miles of trails through the San Bois Mountains, ranging from short walks to the lake shore to longer hikes up to ridgelines with views across the forested rolling hills of southeastern Oklahoma. Horseback riding is popular here, and there are equestrian trails separate from the hiking routes. The lake offers swimming, paddle boats, and fishing. Every September the park hosts a festival and motorcycle rally that brings thousands of visitors to what is otherwise a quiet corner of Oklahoma.

A story
The caves and hollows of this sandstone park were reputedly used as hideouts by Jesse James and Belle Starr in the late 19th century. The Younger Brothers gang also allegedly stashed loot in the caves after raids across Indian Territory, though historians note the legends far outnumber the documented facts.
