Hackleman Historic District

The Hackleman Historic District is Albany's oldest residential neighbourhood, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It preserves a dense collection of mid-19th to early-20th century houses, ranging from Italianate cottages and Gothic Revival homes to Craftsman bungalows. Many were built by Albany's first settlers in the 1840s and 1850s, when the town was establishing itself as an agricultural centre in the Willamette Valley.

Walking through Hackleman is a low-key pleasure: the streets are quiet, the architecture well-maintained, and the overall effect is of a small Oregon town that hasn't tried too hard to become a tourist attraction. Pick up a self-guided walking map from the Albany Visitors Association and you'll be able to identify specific architectural styles and learn which prominent early families lived where.
