Coos Art Museum

The Coos Art Museum occupies a 1936 Art Deco former post office in downtown Coos Bay, and it punches well above its weight for a city of this size — it is the third oldest art museum in Oregon and the only one on the coast. Seven galleries rotate up to 24 exhibitions a year, with a focus on contemporary and regional work, and a permanent collection that draws on Northwest artists and the maritime traditions of the region.

The standout room for many visitors is the Steve Prefontaine Memorial Gallery upstairs. Prefontaine grew up in Coos Bay and became one of the most famous long-distance runners in American history before his death at 24 in 1975. The gallery displays his medals, trophies, photographs, and memorabilia in a serious tribute to a local hero who held American records in every distance from 2,000 to 10,000 meters. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm, admission is modest.
