Coos History Museum

The Coos History Museum opened in a purpose-built bayfront building in 2015, replacing a cramped Victorian-era facility and finally giving one of Oregon's oldest local historical collections room to breathe. The museum was community-funded — more than 550 donors contributed — and the result is a well-organized, thoughtfully presented institution with exhibits covering Native American life, coal mining, shipbuilding, logging, and the maritime history of the bay.

The collection is vast: over 250,000 historic photographs, 40,000 artifacts, and extensive holdings of Coos and Coquille basketry that rank among the finest in the Pacific Northwest. Local shipwrecks are chronicled in detail, and the Victor C. West Maritime Collection covers the working life of the bay in its industrial peak. Changing exhibits ensure something new is usually on view. The bayfront location at 1210 N. Front Street, with views across the water, is part of the appeal.
