Nelscott Reef is the only spot on the Oregon coast that generates big-wave surfing conditions. When a large Pacific swell hits the reef at the right angle, waves can reach 30 to 60 feet — on par with the famous breaks at Mavericks in California or Jaws in Hawaii. Big-wave surfers travel from across the Pacific Northwest on the right days, and the reef is the site of the occasional Nelscott Reef Pro big-wave contest.
For visitors who don't surf, watching from shore on a good swell day is a spectacle. The reef sits just offshore from the beach in the Nelscott area of Lincoln City, roughly in the south of the city. Check surf forecast apps for large swell days; local conditions change quickly.
