Bayocean Peninsula

Windy Tillamook Bay spit where a vanished resort town has returned to beach and shorebirds.

Bayocean is one of the Oregon Coast's better cautionary tales. Developers once promoted it as a grand resort town on the sand spit between Tillamook Bay and the Pacific; jetty work and erosion helped destroy much of it, and the place was eventually abandoned.

Today the peninsula is quiet again: beach, bay, dunes, shorebirds, and long flat walking. Go for the emptiness, but keep the old story in mind. It makes the wind and sand feel less like scenery and more like the main force here.
