Tillamook

Oregon dairy town and Three Capes base, where cheese, bays, and headland walks meet.

Tillamook is a working dairy town just inland from the North Oregon Coast, best known for its creamery but better used as a base for the rougher, quieter coast around Tillamook Bay and the Three Capes Scenic Route. It is not a polished beach resort. That is part of the appeal: farms, fog, cheese, fishing boats, and big Pacific weather all sit close together.

The Tillamook Creamery is the obvious first stop, especially if you are travelling with children or have any weakness for cheddar and ice cream. South and west of town the coast gets much wilder. Cape Lookout State Park has forest trails, beach walking, and long ocean views, while Cape Meares Lighthouse is one of the easiest places in the area to stand above surf, seabirds, and winter storm swells.

Tillamook also has good small-history texture. The Tillamook County Pioneer Museum gives the town and county a human scale, and Bayocean Peninsula tells a stranger story: a once-promoted resort town partly erased by erosion and bad engineering, now returned to wind, sand, and shorebirds.

Come with a car. Public buses can get you into town, but the best of Tillamook lies around the bay, on the capes, and down the side roads where the dairy fields meet the sea.
