Cleft of the Rock Light

Oregon's only privately owned lighthouse, visible from the Cape Perpetua highway

The Cleft of the Rock Light is a privately owned lighthouse on the Cape Perpetua headland, about 1.8 miles south of Yachats. Built in 1976 by a private owner on their property, it was officially recognised by the Coast Guard as an active aid to navigation in 1979 — making it one of the few private lighthouses in the United States with official status. The tower is a distinctive octagonal wooden structure visible from the highway.

The lighthouse is on private property and not open for tours. But it is clearly visible from Highway 101 and from the Cape Perpetua trails, and its unusual status makes it worth a glance — the only lighthouse on the Oregon coast not operated by a government agency. It still uses a rotating light and is a functional navigation aid for small craft.
