Yachats Ocean Road State Natural Site

Short scenic road loop giving close access to wave-battered basalt on the south edge of town

The Yachats Ocean Road loops off Highway 101 at the southern edge of town, following the coast along a section of the original coastal road that predates the modern highway. The ocean here meets a broad shelf of wave-sculpted basalt, and the road runs close enough to the shoreline that spray reaches the windshield in heavy surf. It is a short drive — under a mile — but it gives a genuinely close-up view of the force the Pacific applies to this coast.

In calmer conditions, the basalt shelf is accessible on foot and good for tidepool exploration. The road passes several informal pull-offs where you can park and walk out onto the rock. This is one of those Oregon coast spots that reward simply stopping and sitting for twenty minutes — the rhythm of the waves, the smell of the sea, and the sound are as much the point as anything specific to see.
