York Central Market

York Central Market has operated continuously since 1888, making it one of the oldest farmers markets in the country. The current market house — a Romanesque revival red-brick building — was completed that year and has changed little since. On market days (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings) the stalls fill with local farmers, butchers, bakers, and specialty food vendors selling Pennsylvania Dutch goods: dried meats, scrapple, Lebanon bologna, shoofly pie, and fresh produce.

It's a genuine working market rather than a tourist attraction, which makes it more interesting. The surrounding blocks of downtown York have a cluster of small shops and restaurants that are most active on market mornings. Come early — the best vendors sell out by mid-morning.
