Flat River Reservoir

Large recreational reservoir — locally known as Johnson's Pond — popular for fishing, boating, and summer swimming.

Flat River Reservoir, almost always called Johnson's Pond by locals, fills a long basin in the eastern part of Coventry. At roughly 600 acres it is the largest lake in the town and one of the larger in Rhode Island, with a shoreline lined by year-round homes, summer cottages, and a handful of small public access points. The pond is shallow in places and deep enough in others for good fishing, and the local bass and pickerel populations attract anglers from across the state.

In summer the reservoir is a busy local recreation spot — small boats, jet skis, fishing from the shore. There is a public boat ramp off Reservoir Road and a small swimming beach at the northern end. The pond has occasionally been the subject of controversy when the dam owner has drawn down water levels for maintenance, briefly turning much of the lakebed into mudflats; check current conditions before planning a swim. Outside the busiest July and August weekends it is a pleasantly quiet stretch of water.

A story
Flat River Reservoir was created in the 19th century to power the textile mills along the South Branch of the Pawtuxet River, the same industrial corridor that gave rise to Coventry's mill villages of Anthony, Quidnick, and Washington. The dam at the eastern end held back enough water to keep the wheels turning year-round, and the resulting lake — at around 600 acres — is now one of the larger inland bodies of water in Rhode Island.
