George B. Parker Woodland Wildlife Refuge

Large Audubon refuge in western Rhode Island with quiet woodland trails and old stone walls.

George B. Parker Woodland Wildlife Refuge is one of the better reasons to leave Coventry's main roads. The Audubon property protects a large tract of western Rhode Island woodland, with trails passing stone walls, wetland edges, glacial boulders, and the kind of second-growth forest that rewards slow walking.

It is not a manicured park, and that is the appeal. Wear shoes that can handle mud and roots, bring insect repellent in warm months, and treat it as a quiet nature walk rather than a facilities-heavy family park.
