Chateau-sur-Mer

Early Gilded Age mansion on Bellevue Avenue, grand before Newport learned to be excessive

Chateau-sur-Mer is one of the Newport mansions that shows what came before the Vanderbilt-scale showpieces. Built for the China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore, it was already grand by mid-19th-century standards, with heavy Victorian rooms and a serious, almost civic sense of wealth.

That makes it a useful counterpoint to The Breakers and Marble House. Visit if you want to see Newport's Gilded Age developing rather than arriving fully inflated; the house feels older, darker, and more rooted in the city than the later palaces along Bellevue Avenue.
