Things to Do

Newport's sights divide cleanly between Bellevue Avenue (the Gilded Age mansions, managed by the Preservation Society of Newport County) and the older colonial town around Washington Square and the harbor. The Cliff Walk connects the mansion district to the coast. Thames Street along the harbor is the eating and drinking center. A car helps for getting between the Breakers (far south on Bellevue) and the colonial town, though many visitors walk the whole Bellevue corridor in an afternoon.
