Rough Point is one of Newport's great mansion visits, but it feels different from the most polished Bellevue Avenue showplaces. The house is tied closely to Doris Duke, the tobacco heiress and collector, and its rooms preserve a strong sense of a private life lived amid inherited wealth, art, and ocean air.
The setting is superb, with lawns running toward the Atlantic and a house that mixes grandeur with odd personal detail. If you have time for more than one Newport mansion, Rough Point gives the familiar Gilded Age story a sharper, more individual edge.
